Bring graceful movement into your handwriting with Shaded Spencerian, a style first introduced in the New Spencerian Compendium of 1880. Known for its soft, tapering shades and elegant rhythm, this script adds beauty to titles, headings and short written pieces.

In this monoline session, calligrapher Mike Ward will guide you through simple, approachable steps for building the script from the ground up. You will learn how to visualize and outline each form, then fill it to create the shaded strokes that give the style its character. By the end, you will feel confident writing the first family of short letters and understanding how this classic script comes to life.

Mike Ward is a professional Penman, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, who specializes in Ornamental Penmanship and Spencerian Script and is known worldwide for his ornate, balanced designs. Mike has studied under some of the world’s greatest Penmans, including Master Penmen Michael Sull, Harvest Crittenden and Jake Weidmann. In addition to his penmanship practice, he has also pioneered the technique of debossing or foiling calligraphic designs, onto leather items. Mike is a professional artist, dancer and dance instructor. He is passionate about teaching and sharing his love for the process of learning.
