Take your Spencerian to the next level with Part 2 of our flexible nib series, where you will learn how spacing and longer shaded strokes bring refinement and balance to the script. Shaded Spencerian uses a more compact structure than traditional Spencerian, which makes longer words feel more cohesive on the page.

In this session, Mike Ward will guide you through shaping extended letters using controlled pressure and thoughtful spacing choices. You will practice longer tapered shades, explore how to keep your forms consistent and finish by writing a complete sentence that showcases everything you have learned.

Mike Ward

Instructor

Mike Ward is a professional Penman, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, who specializes in Ornamental Penmanship and Spencerian Script and is known worldwide for his ornate, balanced designs. Mike has studied under some of the world’s greatest Penmans, including Master Penmen Michael Sull, Harvest Crittenden and Jake Weidmann. In addition to his penmanship practice, he has also pioneered the technique of debossing or foiling calligraphic designs, onto leather items. Mike is a professional artist, dancer and dance instructor. He is passionate about teaching and sharing his love for the process of learning.
